The fundamental question the majority of people have when they go into college or university, what job is right for me? I had the very same question going into, and halfway through the first year. Because I had a decent ability with desktops I thought the logical decision was to go into computer science. Building and fixing computers is one thing, programming them is quite another. I held up a whole two and a half months with the course before I had to shift programs otherwise I might have had a GPAmuch less than my blood alcohol content. The remaining portion of the year I was looking out for a path to take so I wouldn’t misuse my time and money taking courses I don’t need.

I had an approximate idea on what I wanted to do for a career after school, but I had a better idea on what I didn’t want to do. I didn’t figure out what kind of program to go into though, and I didn’t know what types of jobs there were after getting a certain degree or diploma. I was fortunate enough to be living in residence where there were heaps of resources to my disposal. In addition there were hundreds of university students experiencing the same thing I was and have made problematic choices before. I talked to my Resident Advisor about the difficulty I was having and she advised that I take a career workshop.

A career workshop is a course where you learn what job field is the best for you. They ask you lots of questions using personality, your good and bad points, plus your likes and dislikes. At the end they tally up your scores and it positions you into various categories that gives you a improved picture of what to do in your future. When I took it I scored 92% in the entrepreneur category. The instructors even had a sheet full of example jobs in each field, and after looking at the entrepreneur category I realized I liked all those job possibilities. So the moment I realized that entrepreneurship or business was suitable for me, only two faculties stood out so I shifted into a business degree and I couldn’t be happier.

the workshop I wouldn’t have been able to realize which path was right for me, at least it would have taken me a lot longer. It made me see my abilities and failings and it taught me to be discover what I was interested in. I always had an idea what it was, but I never could put any words to it. After looking online there doesn’t appear to be any decent courses that provided results as effective as the ones I received from the face-to-face course. At colleges and universities, the course is usually free (paid for by your student union) so I strongly recommend anyone to take it if they are unclear about their future. If it isn’t free it isn’t a lot of money either, and the two hours there can help you save time and money.

In the event you ever ask yourself What Job is right for me"? Than go and take a career workshop!
